Big four logistics company workers – DHL, Fedex, UPS, TNT – target of union push

8 November 2006

Unions are to push to extend union rights and membership at the world’s big four integrator companies – DHL, Fedex, UPS and TNT – as part of a special day on 9 November.

Worldwide over one million workers in integrator firms are represented by trade unions, many of which are members of the ITF or UNI (Union Network International), who are organising the day. On November 9th they will seek to build on existing relationships with the companies, to extend membership or, if necessary, confront those proving hostile to workers joining a union

Individual unions will choose their own way of taking action on the day, in accordance with the wishes of their members, existing relationships, and national laws. Under the banner of Organising Globally, Fighting for Our Rights, activities are likely to include rallies, education and training activities, press conferences and leafleting.

ITF General Secretary David Cockroft commented: “Integrator companies move goods globally using everything from vans to ships to aircraft, and employ people across national boundaries and across transport sectors. If those workers are to enjoy decent jobs, wages and conditions then the unions they make up must also plan globally. That awareness is at the core of this event and the ITF and UNI’s integrators’ campaign.”

During the day unions will be asking those working in companies engaged in express package distribution:

Are you satisfied with your salary/wages and employment conditions?
Are you treated fairly in the workplace?
Do you feel safe at work?
Do you have employment security, health care and retirement benefits?
Do you meet your employer on equal terms?
Is your workplace organised by a trade union?

If the answer to any of these is no, the unions say, then it is time to find out more about the integrators campaign – details of which are at www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/integrators
