A brand new cabin crew network spanning several South American countries has been established following an ITF meeting in Lima, Peru, last month. The meeting aimed to set a common agenda for cabin crew working for the South American airline LAN.
Cabin crew unions from Chile, Argentina and Peru met to discuss organising across LAN Chile, LAN Argentina, LAN Ecuador, LAN Peru and others; it is anticipated that the group will request a meeting with management. The unions also wrote to cabin crew working at LAN Ecuador, encouraging them to organise and participate in the network.
“This meeting was initiated by the affiliates themselves as a way of addressing the need to help organising across boundaries,” said Antonio Fritz, ITF Regional Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean. “Not only does the LAN network fit perfectly into our transnational work, but it also shows that we are able to counterbalance the empire building that management pursues on the employee side.”
Ricardo Frecia, Chair of the ITF's Regional Civil Aviation Committee commented: "This is a huge step in organising workers of the LAN airline group in our region. Our next goal is to target workers of LAN Ecuador who are not organised yet."
