Two trade unionists from a Nepali transport union, killed during demonstrations last month, were remembered at a special ceremony on 29 April in the Nepali capital Kathmandu. The event marked the contribution made by union members to the restoration of democracy in the country.
The two taxi drivers, Suraj Biswas and Pradhumana Khadka were shot dead by security personnel during demonstrations on 19 and 20 April respectively. Suraj Biswas, from Jhapa, joined the ITF-affiliated union Nepal Yatayat Mazdoor Sangh (NYMS) two years ago; Pradhumna Khadka from Kathmandu, had been a member of the Nepal Taxi Drivers’ Union, an affiliate of NYMS, for one and a half years.
Seven other union members were injured.
Among those at the event were Shekhar Koirala, Central Committee Member of the Nepali Congress Party and Laxman Basnet President of the Nepal Trade Union Congress.
Ajay Rai, NYMS President, said that the martyrdom of the two activists for the cause of democracy in Nepal would not be in vain but would inspire and motivate thousands of workers to stand up and defend basic trade union and human rights.
