Avian flu advice issued

The ITF is calling on civil aviation affiliates to take on board World Health Organisation recommendations on avian flu and put in place plans to tackle the issue.
Avian flu, which has moved from its area of origin, has become a matter of concern for both transport workers and passengers. As a result, the ITF is inviting affiliates to consider beginning a process of precautionary planning based on current knowledge and the anticipated spread of the disease.
It is advising them to follow WHO guidelines (www.who.int) and encouraging them to work with employers and health officials to consider a number of risk assessment and emergency planning measures including: providing advice and information on avian flu for transport workers and passengers; setting up inflight and onboard precautionary procedures, such as infection control measures, for example, the use of masks and gloves.
The ITF is also asking for the transport industry to take other steps, such as ensuring transport workers’ concerns and the nature of appropriate precautionary measures are addressed jointly by employers and trade unions.
