Indian transport workers call off strike after tender plan is put on hold

One thousand five hundred transport workers in Mumbai Port have called off strike action after a settlement was reached over plans to put port transport services out to tender. The workers feared their jobs would be at risk if the services were contracted out.
Workers, led by ITF affiliate the All India Port and Dock Workers’ Federation, walked out on strike on 23 June following a call by the Mumbai Port Trust for bidders to carry out port transport services. The trust, administered by the Indian Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, had stipulated that the successful bidder, which would quote the lowest rate, would be free to bring in its own labour.
In a letter to the Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Shri Baalu, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft expressed grave concern that the transport workers could lose their jobs. “The union has argued that the port trust should not give away permanent jobs in favour of work on a contract basis, and has defended the right of the workers at least to be retained in similar jobs within the employment of the port authority,” he told the Minister.
An agreement suspending the tender process and paving the way for negotiations with the union put a halt to the strike on 1 July.
“It was ironic that at the same time as we were discussing the need for social dialogue when restructuring ports at the ILO in Geneva, 1500 workers at the other end of the world were threatened with dismissal, and positive dialogue with their trade union seemed almost impossible due to the inflexible and rigid attitude adopted by the representatives of the port management,” commented Frank Leys, ITF Dockers’ Section Secretary.العودة إلى أخبار الموقع الحالية
