Job losses as TNT leaves Austrian postal market
19/02/10
Postal workers’ jobs in Austria are on the line after it was announced that Redmail – jointly operated by TNT and Styria Media Group – is to pull out of the sector.
The move, claims TNT, is partially as a result of new legislation introducing compulsory licences for on all post weighing up to 50g, which is set to be enforced from 1 January 2011. It also blames the economic crisis for the plans. The company will instead concentrate on regional newspaper deliveries. Some 50 full-time jobs will be cut as a result.
UNI head of post and logistics Neil Anderson said: “TNT should look to their own failures instead of blaming the legislation, which has actually made it easier for them to operate in the mail market in Austria. Jobs have been lost because the companies' ambitions didn't match the realities of the business."
