Workers in protest march over relocation of DHL jobs
12/02/10
More than 250 DHL workers marched through the streets of the Belgian capital recently following a call from union confederations.
The workers, who participated in the demonstration on 29 January, joined thousands of participants who were demanding social justice and employment in Belgium even during the financial crisis. As part of the protest, DHL workers denounced management’s plans to relocate work from Belgium to other countries, with a devastating impact on jobs; almost 800 posts could be affected. Managers showed their solidarity with the employees and encouraged them to join the demonstration or participated themselves.
The unions are calling for: open discussions with DHL management on an alternative business plan to avert the closure of the European headquarters in Brussels; clarification regarding working conditions and the relocation package for those willing to move to Germany or the Czech Republic, where jobs are likely to go; a good social plan for all DHL workers who will lose their job as a result of restructuring.
Ingo Marowsky, ITF global organising coordinator, commented: “The ITF and UNI are supporting the demands of the Belgian trade unions and are in total solidarity with our colleagues in DHL. We call on all affiliated unions to support them in their struggle.”
