South Africa union denounces DHL owner-driver scheme
03/02/10
A South African affiliate has condemned the introduction of a new owner-driver scheme by DHL Express SA.
The South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) states that the scheme was introduced without consultation with union shop stewards. After complaints to management, the union was informed of a meeting that would take place on the issue. During the discussions, Satawu denounced the scheme. Union representatives stated that far from “empowering drivers”, as claimed by management, previous experiences of similar DHL Express schemes showed that it could leave drivers in debt, with some even losing their homes and vehicles.
Liver Mngomezulu, provincial chairperson, Satawu Gauteng province, and a DHL Express employee commented: “Owner drivers are particularly vulnerable to any changes in the market. Global delivery companies are no longer liable to pay any benefits such as sickness or redundancy, as the drivers are no longer considered as employees.”
