ITF welcomes lifting of HIV immigration ban by US government

4 January 2010

World AIDS Day 2009 Campaign Poster*

The ITF welcomes the lifting of a long-standing ban that has prevented individuals with HIV/Aids from entering the US since 1987. The new rules allow people living with HIV/Aids to enter the US and come into effect immediately.

Dr Asif Altaf, ITF HIV/AIDS coordinator, said: "HIV/Aids is of particular concern for ITF unions as transport workers are more vulnerable due to the conditions and nature of their work. The ITF also recognises that workers living with HIV can now lead long and productive working lives. This is why the ITF family has been working to fight stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/Aids at all levels for a number of years now. The lifting of this ban is a positive step in the right direction and is also in line with internationally recognised guidelines on HIV/Aids and human rights that state that any restriction on liberty of movement or choice of residence based on perceived or real HIV status alone, including HIV screening of international travellers, is discriminatory."
