May Day demonstrators call for democracy and trade union rights in Nepal
11/05/05
Ten thousand people - ITF representatives included - got behind a May Day rally in the Nepali capital on 1 May to demand democracy and workers’ rights.
The demonstration, held in Kathmandu and organised jointly by national trade union centres - including the Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC) - and other professional organisations, called for democracy to promote peace and development. It also demanded trade union rights for all workers.
The rally took place alongside those held in other parts of Nepal, such as the Gorakha and Sunsari districts, where a number of union leaders were arrested, only to be released later.
Despite lifting the country’s state of emergency, which was declared by King Gyanendra following his dismissal of the government in February, repressive measures are reported to continue, with key trade union leaders still in detention.
Noriyuki Suzuki, General Secretary of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions’ Asian and Pacific Regional Organisation (ICFTU-APRO), welcomed the lifting of the state of emergency, but demanded the immediate release of trade union detainees. Among them are Pushkar Acharya, NTUC National Committee Senior Vice-President and Vice-President of the ITF-affiliated transport union Nepal Yatayat Mazdoor Sangh, and Bhakta Bahdur Karki, NTUC Kailali District President. NTUC Kaski District President Murari Sharma was released on 10 May.
ICFTU and the ITF were among the seven Global Union Federations represented at the rally.
