ITF calls for solidarity over dismissed aviation trade unionists in Poland
29 July 2009
The ITF has urged affiliated unions to take action in support of two aviation trade unionists in Poland who have been unlawfully dismissed.
Ewira Niemiec, president of the ITF-affiliated Cabin Crew Trade Union, and Grzegorz Kossowski, president of the LOT Polish Airlines Employees’ Union, were sacked during collective bargaining negotiations by their airline employer.
Under Polish law, the two trade unionists enjoy special job security rights and cannot be dismissed without the consent of their trade union boards. Both unions’ boards concluded that neither Elwira Niemic nor Grzegorz Kossowski had failed to comply with their duties as employees and that therefore LOT Polish Airlines had terminated the union leaders’ contracts without their consent.
On 28 July, the ITF urged its members to write to LOT Polish Airlines president, Sebastian Mikosz, in protest against this anti-union action and clear breach of International Labour Organization conventions on freedom of association and the right to organise.
Gabriel Mocho, ITF civil aviation section secretary, commented: “Not only do these actions flout Polish law and international conventions ratified by Poland, but they also run counter to developing good working relations, essential for aviation companies during these difficult economic times. We demand the immediate reinstatement of our colleagues.”
