Global unions protest ongoing human rights abuses in Nepal

21/03/05

The ITF is urging all affiliated unions to participate in an international trade union action day tomorrow, 22 March, calling for the restoration of democracy and trade union rights in Nepal.

Trade union leaders are continuing to endure arrest and torture in Nepal nearly two months after King Gyanendra dismissed the country’s democratic government.

According to reports received by the ITF, those most recently seized include Mr Ramjee Kunwar, national vice-president of the Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC), who was arrested in Pokhara city in the Kaski district on 20 March and remains in jail. Two weeks earlier, on 4 March, the union centre’s Kaski district president, Mr Murari Sharma, was arrested during a peaceful protest in Pokhara against the royal coup.

Mr Binda Sahani, Rauthat district president of the NTUC, was arrested on 18th March and also remains in jail.

Mr. Bhakt Bahadur Karki, a local NTUC leader, was arrested on 18 February  at Kailali District; Mr Dipak Tamang, Jhapa district president of the NTUC was arrested on the same day and, he alleges, tortured by security personnel before his release on 3 March.

The reports suggest transport workers are among groups being targeted by police and subjected to harassment. A senior trade union source said: “Any simple mistake and they charge a huge fine, confiscate the driving licence and threaten to destroy it.”

Trade union groups report they have formed a coalition together with transport business representatives to approach government authorities for talks and to present a petition. They are also planning to issue a press release alleging police torture of transport workers and trade unionists.

Unions are encouraged to join in any actions being organised by their national centre, or to organise protest gestures of their own. The day of action to defend trade union rights in Nepal has been called by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the World Confederation of Labour (WCL).
