New spirit of cooperation across the Atlantic

Two ITF affiliates struck a landmark accord, agreeing to greater co-operation and exchange of expertise and experience during a meeting on 24 February.
Leaders of the Teamsters Union and the Transport and General Workers’ Union (T&G), the US and UK’s largest transport unions agreed to work together to keep abreast of developments in global multinational companies. Both unions have members or plan to recruit and organise in these companies.
Welcoming a new spirit of co-operation, T&G General Secretary Tony Woodley said cooperation between the two unions would benefit working people globally. "I want the T&G to play a very positive role with the Teamsters who have a fantastic history and reputation," he said in his opening address. "The T&G is committed to a fighting back culture to make a difference for people in the logistics industry as a whole. We can only benefit from the link with our American colleagues as we go forward in recruiting and organising drivers, warehouse staff and others throughout the supply chain."
James P Hoffa, General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said he was sure each side could learn from one another. "We are committed to the highest level of representation for our members and that means understanding the implications of global corporate behaviour," he said. "The T&G can be our eyes and ears in that battle just as we will be a source of experience and motivation for them."
The T&G and Teamsters leaders were attending meetings at the end of February in London, UK, in conjunction with the ITF’s international meeting on integrators.
