Unions to forge international links across integrator companies
2 March 2005
Key unions organising in the big four integrator companies are to establish closer ties in a bid to enhance union organisation.
The trade unionists, representing workers at UPS, DHL, Fedex and TNT, met at ITF headquarters in London, UK, on 22-23 February. The meeting aimed to develop a programme of stronger coordination between unions organising workers in the global operations of these companies. Experts gave presentations on the worldwide industry and corporate trends, while unions’ country briefings provided a broad picture of labour relations within the firms.
The 48 participants, representing 21 unions from 16 countries agreed a range of tasks focusing on building union organisation, including developing an information sharing network and a researchers' working group. A strategy group is being established and will meet in the US later in the year.
“Unions voiced a strong commitment to continuing and developing this coordination work and ensuring involvement of relevant unions from all regions,” commented ITF Assistant General Secretary Stuart Howard.Back to current news online stories
