The ITF’s executive board gave the organisation’s young transport workers’ project a ringing endorsement last week.

A delegation of young transport workers made a presentation to the board, which met on 23-24 April in London, UK, during which they invited members to take a number of steps. These included: endorse their proposal for a dedicated young transport workers’ event at the ITF’s congress in Mexico next year; address ways of encouraging affiliates to consider inviting a significant number of young workers to ITF events and amending the ITF constitution to recognise the importance of promoting the young workers’ programme.

The board members agreed to all the young workers’ demands, including to put the constitutional changes to congress, and in turn invited them to set up a steering committee to lead on work in the run-up to congress and beyond and to draft a resolution on young workers for the event.

Commenting on the board’s reception of the young workers’ presentation, Jay Dalaya, a member of the ITF young workers’ taskgroup and Indian Aviation Industry Employees’ Guild representative, said: “It was splendid and we were given a standing ovation. This was contrary to how we imagined it might be debated... I guess they have all realised the future is the youth!”

A delighted Fatima Aguado, member of the Spanish CC.00 union and also on the taskgroup, exclaimed: "We did it, we achieved our goals!"
