ITF General Secretary David Cockroft and representatives of an Indian railway union last week laid a garland on the monument to people killed in the Mumbai attacks in November. Cockroft was visiting the subcontinent to meet with Indian and Sri Lankan unions.

During his trip, he joined a large delegation from the National Railway Mazdoor Union, part of the ITF-affiliated All India Railwaymen’s Federation, to visit the Chhatrapati Shivaji railway station in Mumbai. The station was one of the scenes of the horrific terrorist attacks, which left 74 people dead. Many more were saved by a public announcement by a union member who advised them to take refuge in the train crews’ office.

Cockroft also attended a meeting of the ITF national coordinating committee in Mumbai, where discussions took place on the government’s attempts to deregulate ground handling services in all major airlines.

In addition, he visited Chennai, where issues such as port restructuring and organising global delivery workers were debated. Meanwhile, during his first visit to Sri Lanka, a crucial hub for Asian transport, Cockroft met with representatives of transport union in all sectors.

Commenting on his visit, Cockroft said: “As ever I received a warm welcome from ITF affiliates, who continue to do great things in the region.”
