Workers in Togo tap into the mainstream to promote HIV awareness
19 February 2009
Some 700 people turned out in a Togo port earlier this week to get to grips with the issue of HIV and AIDS.
They were attending an event in Lome port organised jointly by the ITF-affiliated dockers’ union, Syndicat des Travailleurs du Port Autonome de Lomé, members of the ITF’s women’s network in Togo, employers and the port authority. Tapping into this year’s Valentine’s Day celebrations earlier this week, the event on 16 February aimed to mainstream the HIV/AIDS awareness message. As part of the celebrations, workers distributed condoms and education material and organised performances of song, poetry and drama.
ITF HIV/AIDS Coordinator Dr Asif Altaf said: “This initiative is an example of how workers can use social events and key dates in the calendar to promote HIV/AIDS awareness – they don’t have to wait until World AIDS Day on 1 December. It is crucial that HIV/AIDS awareness is something that is promoted throughout the year.”
