The ITF’s European arm, the ETF has expressed solidarity with transport workers in France who last week took a day of national action against the government’s proposed economic plan.
Last Thursday, hundreds of thousands of French workers, including transport workers and their unions, took part in a general strike in protest against the way in which the French government is dealing with the economic crisis. They believe that whilst businesses have received considerable assistance, little has been done to protect jobs and workers’ pay.
In a letter of solidarity released last week, ETF General Secretary Eduardo Chagas said: “The only way that we will reverse the effects of the economic crisis is by keeping employment steady, not by eliminating jobs and withholding salaries.”
He added: “Your fight serves to benefit all citizens alike, and it is important that you continue this battle. The government must respect the right for social dialogue, and listen to its citizens when they say that mass firings are not the answer. The safeguarding of steady employment, the improvement of social aide, and the amelioration of purchasing power are key elements needed to improve the current situation.”
