Thailand: ITF hope for a democratic solution
5 December 2008
The ITF has welcomed the peaceful end to the crisis in Thailand, which left tourists stranded at the country’s main airports for eight days.
The crisis involved the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), supported by a number of trade unions - including the ITF-affiliated State Railway Workers’ Union of Thailand, Thai Airways International State Employees Union, Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited State Enterprise Worker Union, Labour Union of Port Authority of Thailand and State Enterprise Labour Union of Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand. They held protests at the country’s international and domestic airports calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, who they believe represented a puppet government ruling Thailand on behalf of the ousted and banned former leader, Thaksin Shinawatra.
However, the protests were suspended after the constitutional court ruled on Tuesday that the parties that form the ruling coalition should disband. In September, the court also deposed the pro-Thaksin government, led by Samak Sundaravej.
More than 300,000 tourists were stranded in Thailand as a result of the airport closures. The export economy was also badly affected with a knock-on effect in other countries – Japanese car manufacturers, for example, have been feeling the impact of this, Thailand being a strategic location for car component parts production.
ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said: “We welcome this peaceful respite in the crisis and now hope to see a long-term democratic solution in place.”
The PAD has not ruled out further actions next week if necessary.
