Neo-liberal policies need clear and firm union response
4 December 2008
European workers and the unions that represent them must respond decisively to tackle the challenges of a neo-liberal agenda, delegates were told at a meeting in Berlin, Germany, last week.
Eduardo Chagas, General Secretary of the ITF's European arm, the ETF, delivered this message during his address to the congress of the ITF-affiliated German rail union, Transnet, on 23-27 November. Chagas, was among an international delegation attending the first three days of the congress, along with Øystein Aslaksen, representing the ITF in his capacity as ITF Railway Section Chair.
Chagas said that cross border solidarity was now, more than ever, crucial for workers in the transport industry.
“This is a moment of growing pressure on labour and social rights, with the spread of social and wage dumping, attacks on trade unions and the expansion of neo-liberal policies, which require a clear and firm response from European workers and their organisations,” he said.
“The current international economic scenario, where the greed of financial players used people as disposable assets and led to a predictable crisis, will also impact on the real economy and jobs are seriously under threat."
He told participants that it was time to confront governments to ensure that the “same support” that has propped up the collapsing banking system is given to retain jobs and living standards.
Chagas also highlighted Transnet’s role in defending the aspirations and rights of railway workers, congratulated Alexander Kirchner on his election to the presidency of the union and welcomed the election of other new board members.
