Hebei Two campaign - Indian unions call for boycott
21 November 2008
The National Union of Seafarers of India and the Maritime Union of India
are calling for a boycott of South Korean companies and products in
protest over the continuing detention in South Korea of the Hebei Two,
the master and chief officer of the
Hebei Spirit. Captain Jasprit
Chawla and chief officer Syam Chetan have been held pending a retrial
over an oil spillage from their vessel. They were cleared of charges in
a court case earlier this year.
Seoul's high court will give its verdict on the retrial on 10 December.
The Indian unions have called on the country's 200,000 seafarers, as
well as ship owners and shipping staff and the general public, to stop
buying Samsung products. They also want Indian shipping companies to
cancel orders in South Korea for new ships.
A new blog calling for fair treatment for the Hebei Two has been
launched and can be viewed at the link below.
