ITF appeals for contributions for Georgia/South Ossetia conflict victims

14 August 2008

The ITF is urging affiliated unions to support a fund to assist victims of the conflict between Russia and Georgia in and around South Ossetia.

The federation has called on transport unions to back an appeal for donations from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). The money will go into a fund to provide humanitarian relief following the conflict in South Ossetia. The ITF has affiliates in both Russia and Georgia.

Earlier this week, the ITF issued a statement strongly supporting a call by the ITUC and the ETUC for an end to military action in the region and for a peaceful process of dialogue to begin.

ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said: “It’s vital that there is an immediate cessation of all hostilities in the area, coupled with urgent and meaningful negotiations. The third immediate need is for humanitarian assistance, which, thanks to the ITUC, we and other trade unions can now more easily give.”

Contributions should be sent to: ITUC-CSI account number 375-1008200-61 with the Bank ING, Business Branch Institutionals, Rue du Trône 14-16, B-1000 Brussels (IBAN code: BE62375100820061 - BIC/Swift Code: BBRUBEBB).The ITUC and ETUC will also pass on solidarity messages to those who have been caught up in the conflict.
