Strikes by water workers in Bangladesh called off
25 July 2008
Water workers in Bangladesh have suspended industrial action after the government pledged to increase pay.
Launch workers represented by the ITF-affiliated Bangladesh Water Transport Workers’ Federation (BWTWF) took official strike action at midnight on 10 July, to call for a wage increase that reflects the cost of living. They also participated in spontaneous strikes on the following day until 12 July.
However, meetings between the union, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and vessel owners, led to an agreement that wages would be increased. Ashiqul Alam, General Secretary of the BWTWF, stated that the government’s assurances on pay had convinced the union to suspend the strike.
A committee charged with drawing up a new pay scale is shortly due to report on its recommendations.
