Meeting with German affiliate tackles ways to bolster international ties

17 July 2008

The ITF and the new leadership of the German rail union Transnet have met to discuss strengthening the union's international links.

During the meeting, which took place in Frankfurt, Germany, on 11 July, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft personally congratulated Lothar Krauss, who was recently elected President of the ITF-affiliated rail union Transnet. He replaces Norbert Hansen who was moved to a management position in Deutsche Bahn (DB), the German railways. Also present at the meeting were ITF Railway Section President Oysten Aslasken, ITF Inland Transport Section Secretary Mac Urata and Transnet’s Divisional Director, Gottfried Geisel.

The parties discussed future collaboration, including Transnet’s membership of the ITF Executive Board as well as the expansion of DB, into a global logistics operator. Joint working is crucial between Transnet and unions in those countries where DB is buying into new markets; a meeting with concerned unions is scheduled to take place early in 2009. Cockroft and Krauss emphasised the critical role of global solidarity in challenging this development.
