Lufthansa workers stage strike action in Frankfurt airport terminal*

More than 3000 workers walked out on Tuesday in the latest of a series of “warning strikes” over pay at Germany’s national carrier, Lufthansa.

The workers, including cabin crew and ground staff, represented by the ITF-affiliated German union, Verdi, went on strike at Frankfurt airport as part of action over collective bargaining negotiations with Lufthansa. A number of flights were cancelled as a result. A further 1500 colleagues in other parts of Germany also took strike action.

Workers are holding out for a 9.8 per cent pay rise; to date management has offered them 3.4 per cent.

The action in Frankfurt follows strikes at Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Munich airports over the past two weeks.

Collective bargaining negotiations are set to resume today.

Ingo Marowsky, ITF Civil Aviation Section Secretary, commented: “We are backing our German affiliate’s struggle to stave off the company’s attempts to erode workers’ pay. It is good to see that some airlines are still doing well; these profits should be shared with employees, who have clearly contributed to the success of the airline.”
