Dockers in strike action over pay in Polish port
26 March 2008
Dockers in the Polish port of Gdynia are on their sixth day of strike action in a continuing effort to win a fair wage.
More than 500 workers represented by the ITF-affiliated Polish unions Komisja Międzyzakładowa NSZZ “Solidarność” Portu Gdynia and Komisja Zakładowa NSZZ “Solidarność” Bałtycki Terminal Kontenerowy began indefinite strike action on 20 March in a dispute over pay. The workers rejected a five per cent offer – 119 PLN (US$53) - made by the management of the privately-owned Baltic Container Terminal Limited, which operates the Gdynia terminal, during negotiations in January. They are demanding an increase of 300 PLN (US$134). Other demands include: an end to the violation of safety at work regulations; the restoration of double staffing on travelling cranes and in cool containers for safety reasons and allowing technical support employees to carry out overtime rather than outsource the work.
Frank Leys, ITF Dockers’ Section Secretary, commented: “The ITF and ETF will respond with diligence to any appeal for solidarity from their affiliates and use all appropriate lawful means to assist the workers in their struggle for proper remuneration and safe working conditions. Dockers’ and transport workers’ unions in the region and throughout the world have been informed and will stand by their colleagues. We will monitor developments in the field closely and endeavour to facilitate a dialogue that delivers a negotiated solution acceptable to all parties if we are asked to.”
Baltic Container Terminal, which is owned by the worldwide terminal operator International Containers Terminal Services Inc, handles most of Poland’s maritime container cargo and is the largest container port in the southern Baltic Sea region.
