Social charter for French airline group workers

29 February 2008

A social charter adopted by a French airline group last week will protect the rights and working conditions of all of its workers and provide other airlines around the world with a blueprint for positive employment practices.

The charter, which emerged from an agreement between Air France KLM (AF KLM) and the European Works Council (EWC), was co-signed by an AF KLM representative and ETF General Secretary Eduardo Chagas along with EWC representatives.

It commits AF KLM Group, part of the Skyteam Alliance, to upholding and complying with international and EU social rights legislation, promoting health and safety at work, fostering employability and respecting pay and benefits outlined in collective and individual agreements. Covering all AF KLM’s sub-contractors, the document also highlights the responsibility to promote social dialogue and consultation with employees.

The charter offers up a good practice model to other airlines around the world. Ingo Marowsky, ITF Civil Aviation Section Secretary, explains: “The Air France KLM social charter is a model for other Skyteam alliance airlines. We hope this kind of agreement will not just be limited to this airline but will be rolled out across airlines around the world.

"In particular we will look into the possibilities that this agreement gives us to support the ongoing organising campaign for cabin crew in Delta Air Lines, also a Skyteam alliance member."

The European Works’ Council will monitor the implementation of the charter.
