African unions commit to global organising

7 November 2007

Transport unions from across Africa have pledged their commitment to spread the ITF’s organising globally message in a bid to strengthen their role in the region.

The 22 participants representing 15 countries - including Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe – came together at the ITF’s Africa regional committee meeting in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, from 22-23 October.

The delegates discussed a range of issues relating to the organising globally strategy, such as the role of elected office bearers and committees in the implementation of the strategy, trade union education and the participation of women, young workers and grassroots activists.

They also issued a declaration committing to take a number of steps. These included: raising awareness of the strategy among grassroots activists who are at the forefront of implementing international action; promoting trade union “action readiness” by organising ITF organising globally study circles, ITF video shows and public debates and encouraging individuals and unions to share knowledge to empower them to lobby, campaign and negotiate on behalf of workers.

ITF General Secretary David Cockroft and ITF President Randall Howard, who attended and facilitated the meeting, pledged to support ITF Africa’s organising globally implementation efforts.

Joe Katende, ITF Africa Regional Secretary commented: “Effective communication among African affiliates and between them and the rest of the players at international level is one of the most critical success factors in the implementation of the ITF’s organising globally strategy. I believe that the discussions at this meeting will have put good communication on the agenda of the participating unions.”
