European road transport workers set for protest rally in ITF week of action

Road transport workers across Europe are embarking on a protest rally in Brussels, Belgium, calling for their demands on pay and rest facilities to be met. The protest will take place on Monday as part of the ITF’s international road transport action week from 15-21 October.
Called by the ITF’s European arm, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), the demonstration will see 150 truck drivers from 12 European countries assemble in front of the European Parliament. An ETF delegation will later meet with EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot. The workers are demanding equal pay and conditions for all European professional drivers on cross border road transport operations as well as safer and more affordable rest facilities.
As part of their protest, the workers will also hold a demonstration outside the Iranian embassy to call for the release of imprisoned Iranian union leaders Mansour Osanloo amd Ebrahim Madadi.
Mac Urata, ITF Inland Transport Section Secretary, commented: “This European action will be one of many that we hope will take place around the world. This year, the action week will operate under the slogan Organising globally - building union power. As part of the week we are also emphasising the importance of trade union rights."
