Metro workers in Romania call off strike after deal is struck

15 March 2007

Metro workers in Bucharest, Romania, have negotiated a collective bargaining agreement with Metrorex, the state-owned company that runs the system, following a pledge by the union to go on strike for a second time.

The workers, members of the ITF-affiliated Uniunea Sindicatelor Libere Metrou si Aviatie Civila (USLMA), initially walked out on strike on 20 February after pay negotiations between management and the union remained deadlocked over whether or not the company’s budget had been approved by parliament. Management remained intransigent.

However, a decision to take further action on 27 February resulted in a management climbdown; the union was invited to meet with the Ministry of Transport and the company the day before the strike was due to take place.

A new collective agreement was reached on 28 February, giving all workers a fixed wage increase.

Marinela Bratu of the USLMA International Relations Department commented: "This is a particularly favourable solution for workers on low wages. People working underground need better pay and good working conditions. Winning this struggle means our members benefit."
