The ITF will be standing up for social justice, international solidarity and equality, along with thousands of other activists, at the seventh World Social Forum (WSF) in Kenya over the coming week.
Representatives from social movements, networks, coalitions and other progressive forces from around the world will converge in Nairobi for the forum, which will run from 20 – 25 January.
Under the slogan “people’s struggles, people’s alternatives”, the forum represents a “global counterforce” against neo-liberal policies, which have had a devastating impact on the lives of many poor people around the world. Since its inception in 2001 in Porto Alegre in Brazil, the WSF has placed social justice, solidarity, gender equality, peace and defence of the environment on the international agenda.
The event will involve a range of activities including workshops, processions and film nights.
ITF General Secretary David Cockroft commented: “Holding the WSF for the first time in Africa sends a message that Africa’s workers are determined to be part of the process of controlling globalisation. The ITF’s Kenyan affiliates will be busy welcoming participants at the airport and transporting them around Nairobi. They will see for themselves the disastrous impact of unplanned and unregulated public transport on the operation of a major African city.
“As at previous WSF gatherings, the main task of the ITF and other Global Union family members will be to demonstrate the important role of strong democratic trade unions in creating a better world.”
