Unions urged to act on 1 December, World AIDS Day 2006
17/11/06
The ITF is calling on unions to join in a long-term campaign to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in the workplace, kicking off with activities to mark World AIDS Day on 1 December.
Transport workers are among those who are more vulnerable to acquiring and transmitting HIV because of the nature and conditions of their work. Yet little attention has been paid to reducing the vulnerability facing transport workers. That’s why the role of transport unions is key to helping develop a viable response to the pandemic.
Dr Asif Altaf, ITF HIV/AIDS Coordinator, commented: “The objectives of this campaign are to move HIV/AIDS into unions’ core programmes and activities and to encourage unions to regard HIV as a workplace issue. The ITF strongly believes that, with the organisational strength of over 600 affiliated unions in 148 countries, we can make a difference and keep transport workers and their families healthy and safe from HIV/AIDS.”
