Global solidarity to put organising on the agenda
16 November 2006
Trade union actions across 11 countries have united transport workers in a common cause, getting the “organising globally” message across in the integrator sector. The ITF affiliates’ activities were part of an international action day on UPS, DHL, TNT and FedEx, organised jointly by the ITF and Union Network International (UNI), that took place last Thursday.
Members of the Federation of Hong Kong Transport Workers’ Organisations met with workers at integrator company service centres in the New Territories of Hong Kong to discuss issues such as health and safety and management’s relationship with workers.
In Australia, members of the Transport Workers’ Union carried out a number of actions, including a recruitment campaign and a presentation on the action day to parliament.
Meanwhile workers in France, represented by the CGT, began a second wave of strike action on at DHL worksites nationwide. This followed a successful 24-hour stoppage on 17 October. The union is in dispute over proposed changes to the wage system.
For union representatives from the Moroccan affiliate, UMT, the issues of freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining were the focus of a demonstration in front of DHL offices in Casablanca.
Transport unions from Canada, Germany, Great Britain, India, South Africa, Tanzania and the US, also organised actions.
Mac Urata, ITF Inland Transport Section Secretary, said: “This action day proves that unions in the big four integrators are part of a global labour movement to bring these multinationals into line. We are very pleased with the turnout and the sense of international solidarity that we generated together with UNI.”Related documents:
