Thai unions campaign to stamp out sexual harassment in transport
15 Novembro 2006
Women transport workers in Thailand are campaigning to put an end to sexual harassment in the workplace. The workers, represented by several Thai ITF-affiliated unions spanning civil aviation, rail and road transport, have been organising a series of activities over the past two months, designed to highlight the issue of sexual harassment.
Campaign activities included a women’s seminar in Bangkok, involving participants from seven unions, the distribution of leaflets and T-shirts to raise awareness of the issue and presentations to union board meetings, during which case study examples of harassment were shared.
ITF Women’s Officer Sarah Finke said: “Women, like their male counterparts, are seeing globalisation, deregulation and privatisation squeeze their jobs, wages and conditions. But they also face additional challenges, like sexual harassment, so it’s vital that unions help to raise awareness of these issues too.”
Suangcana Tungworachet, ITF Thai Project Coordinator, who has been coordinating the event, added: "The efforts of the Thai women activists in promoting this campaign are commendable. Women need to use their voice to stamp out domestic and workplace harassment and violence. The Thai unions’ enthusiasm and solidarity are really making this campaign a success.”
