Civil aviation workers in Kenya call off strike action
27 October 2006
Strike action by civil aviation workers in Kenya has been averted after a dispute over recognition was referred to an industrial court.
Members of the ITF-affiliated Aviation and Allied Workers’ Union, representing employees of national carrier Kenya Airways, threatened to walk out on strike on 20 October after the company refused to sign a recognition agreement with the union. The action would have covered ground handling and cabin crew staff at the airline.
However, the action was later called off following intervention by the Minister of Labour, who referred the dispute to an industrial court; a date for the court hearing has been set for 28 November. The union is nevertheless working towards trying to settle the dispute before that date.
