New global union body and solidarity on ICFTU Congress agenda

01/12/04

The World Congress of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) is on course to discuss the birth of new worldwide trade union structures.

The ICFTU’s 18th Congress, taking up the "Globalising Solidarity" theme used by the ITF Congress in Canada in 2002, will take place on 5 - 10 December 2004 in Miyazaki, Japan.

The Congress will be asked to give the go ahead to negotiations between the ICFTU and the World Confederation of Labour (WCL), to create one organisation. This would be open to other trade union national centres not currently members of either grouping.

General Secretary of the ICFTU, Guy Ryder, will also put forward proposals to strengthen cooperation between the ICFTU and sectoral Global Union Federations - among them the ITF. The proposals include structured approaches to different topics and the establishment of a “Global Unions Council” to debate issues of common concern, both internationally and regionally.

The ITF will be represented at the Congress by a delegation including General Secretary David Cockroft and ITF President Umraomal Purohit. A significant number of officials of ITF affiliated trade unions will also be present as part of national centre delegations. These delegates are encouraged to let the ITF know they will be attending.
