Petition to back dockers in New Zealand

09/02/2012

Unionists have been showing their support for dockers in New Zealand who have been engaged in a protracted dispute with their employer Ports of Auckland Limited (POAL). The company is moving towards the total outsourcing of all container terminal labour to private companies; this will mean redundancy for the entire workforce.

Activists have been signing a petition addressed to Tony Gibson, chief executive officer of POAL. There they have been expressing support for the Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) workers and calling on the company to ensure that secure employment is provided for all employees.

Meanwhile, the MUNZ has announced further industrial action. The new strike dates run from 7am on 15 February until 7am on 22 February. The union says that this legal industrial action aims to protect workers’ jobs and livelihoods from outsourcing and casualisation.

Frank Leys, ITF dockers’ section secretary, said: “The union has no option but to continue with industrial action in the face of the company’s intransigence. The workers and their union have the backing of the ITF and its affiliates.”

A major campaign run by the MUNZ in collaboration with the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions and the ITF is also underway. Visit the campaign website www.saveourport.com for more information and to sign the petition.
