European unions vow to back Polish truckers
08/02/2012
Unions across Europe have established a plan of action to assist their Polish trucker colleagues, a number of whom were dismissed after they participated in strike action.
The 350 workers represented by Polish union Solidarnosc took strike action from 2-18 January in protest over the refusal of trucking firm Norbert Dentressangle (ND) to improve wages and working conditions, which are well below those of its drivers from other countries. Twenty-nine workers were dismissed in the aftermath of the strike. The union has also attempted – in vain – to engage the company in talks.
At this week’s road transport section meeting of the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), the ITF’s European arm, unionists adopted an action plan to help their Polish colleagues. This involves a number of campaign activities over the next few months to draw attention to ND’s social dumping in Poland.
ETF road transport section president Roberto Parrillo commented: “It is now the right time to act against the social dumping practices resorted to by Norbert Dentressangle. Our Polish colleagues have been working for years on low pay and horrendous conditions. This has to end now. Road transport trade unions have just committed to back up Solidarnosc and their members to end discrimination on the pure basis of nationality.”
