Building alliances is key to tackling climate change, says ITF

15 Dezembro 2010

The ITF has emphasised the importance of forging links between unions and social movements to give transport workers a voice in the climate change debate.

ITF representatives, including Asbjorn Wahl, chair of the ITF climate change working group, expressed the view at the Dialogo Climatico, convened by social movements and non-governmental organisations in Cancun, Mexico, from 1-10 December. The event ran parallel with the United Nations (UN) climate change conference.

Participating in the “World of work” pavilion, organised by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the ITF addressed the issues of rising transport emissions, the development of an approach that recognises the relationship between transport and other economic sectors and sustainable transport alternatives. It was vital to build alliances between the labour movement and other social movements, including environmental groups to ensure that workers had a say on climate change. Asbjorn Wahl told delegates: “We have to build union power so that our demands and interests are heard.”

During the session, the labour movement welcomed the final agreement reached at the UN conference, which includes reference to trade union demands for a “just transition.” This aims to create decent work and quality jobs and is crucial in building workers' support for climate action. However, this was not enough, as Sharon Burrow, ITUC general secretary, explained: “Governments must return to the negotiating table as soon as possible, and rectify the imbalances and omissions following Cancun.” She added that Durban, South Africa, the location for next year’s UN climate change conference, should lead to “serious climate action with a fair, ambitious and binding agreement.”
