Railway workers join global campaign to end violence against women

25 November 2009

Railway workers in South East Asia drove home the anti-violence message today in support of the United Nation’s international day for the elimination of violence against women.

The railway trade unionists from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Singapore marked the day, 25 November, at the ITF/Friedrich Ebert Stiftung South and South East Asian railway seminar in Singapore. Women unionists, who held up placards declaring “No to violence”, read out statistics and facts, which revealed the extent of violent acts perpetrated against women. They were supported by their male counterparts who joined them in voicing the message "No to violence". Participants at the seminar also wore the ITF white ribbon to show their commitment to the anti-violence campaign.

Sexual harassment and violence at work as well as strategies for combating them were also discussed by representatives attending the ITF/FNV seminar for Asian road and rail women workers on 23-24 November, also in Singapore.

Alison McGarry, ITF women’s coordinator, said: "Once again ITF women and men across the globe are organising many activities to show that violence against women is totally unacceptable. Unions are developing action plans to combat workplace violence and make employers take steps to ensure women’s working environment is safe."
