Transport workers gear up for women’s rights campaign day
24 Fevereiro 2009
Next week transport workers around the world will be challenging governments and employers to uphold women’s rights.
The workers are taking part in the ITF’s global campaign for women’s rights, which takes place on International Women’s Day, 8 March. Now in its eighth year, the ITF’s campaign will see transport workers’ unions organising activities under the slogan “Rights for women mean rights for all”. This reflects ongoing discussions around securing good workplace conditions for women and in turn benefiting all workers.
The activities planned include: a survey on women's rights at work by a Mongolian union; educational sessions and a workshop to inform women of their rights in the transport sector by a Jordanian union; and a newspaper campaign by a Ukrainian union.
ITF Women’s Officer Alison McGarry said: “Like most workers in the industry, women are seeing globalisation, deregulation and privatisation squeeze their jobs, wages and conditions. Women also face other issues such as unequal wages, poor parenting and maternity provision, discrimination and harassment. That’s why a campaign to highlight women’s rights is crucial.”
The ITF's campaign is part of a wider two-year Global Campaign for Decent Work, Decent Life for Women initiative by the International Trade Union Confederation, which was launched last year.
