Unions influence ILO HIV/AIDS code of practice

1 Dezembro 2004

The ITF was among a number of trade unions represented at an International Labour Organisation (ILO) workshop - held in the run-up to World AIDS Day today - focusing on HIV in the transport sector.

The aim of the tripartite meeting in Pretoria, South Africa, on 25-26 November, was to validate the draft guidelines for the transport sector of the "ILO code of practice on HIV/AIDS and the world of work" and training manual.

Working groups, involving transport union representatives, including the ITF's HIV Coordinator Kemal Ulker, reviewed the guidelines in the context of knowledge, practice and experience in the transport sector. The recommendations will contribute to the fine-tuning of the manual.

Ulker commented: "The meeting was well-attended by trade unions, highlighting their commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS. However, government attendance was weak and employers were not represented at all. Their commitment to the issue is vital if progress is to be made."

"The manual will be an important tool for trade unions and their members," he added.

Another tripartite workshop will take place next year to take forward work on the draft. Once finalised, the guidelines will be published, translated into several languages, and widely disseminated.

The ITF produces a bimonthly newsletter on HIV/AIDS and transport in Africa available for download here. You can also download the ITF's HIV/AIDS resource book for transport trade unionists below.
