ITF condemns “reckless removal” of fuel subsidy in Nigeria
12/01/12
The ITF has denounced the Nigerian government for removing a fuel subsidy that has provoked a national strike across the country. Oil prices rose by 140 per cent on 1 January this year as a result of the government’s action.
Following an emergency meeting in Abuja on 4 January, the two major labour unions – Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria – declared that workers would begin an indefinite strike on 9 January in protest, unless the decision was reversed.
ITF-affiliated unions were among those that resolved to take strike action. They included: the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria; Maritime Workers' Union of Nigeria; National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers; Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers' and Water Transport Senior Staff Association; National Union of Air Transport Employees and the National Union of Road Transport Workers of Nigeria.
In a statement released on 10 January, ITF general secretary David Cockroft said: "Nigeria's unions are at the forefront of this strike, which is sweeping the country.”
“They are acting to defend a fuel subsidy which is the only thing that most Nigerians get out of a national oil industry riddled and rotten with corruption. The president's reckless removal of it doubled the cost of fuel and transport for ordinary Nigerians literally overnight.”
ITF African regional secretary Joseph Katende added: “Nigeria’s unions, including its transport unions, are united behind this strike. The president’s removal of the subsidy was impossibly reckless, and blatantly ignored parliament’s advice to hold back, review and consult.”
He concluded: “Our member unions in Nigeria have confirmed that the strike is overwhelmingly supported and effective. To give just one example, our affiliated aviation unions have confirmed that the airports are paralysed and only one inward flight has been allowed to land, for humanitarian reasons.”
