Improving communications: a critical success factor

ITF Africa is convinced that a major priority for its work at national and international level is the improvement of the communications capacity of its affiliates. Important work is being done every day by African unions to serve African and visiting transport workers, but very little of it is ever reported.

The Africa Regional Committee (ARC) that met in Tunisia in 2007 recognised the need for a concerted effort to change this situation. It looked at innovative ways in which Africa could improve its communications, which were identified as a critical success factor. As a result, a long term communications project was launched that has led to information being collected at every ITF Africa event and then fed into the improvement strategy.

A major communications event is also being designed as a part of the ARC activities in Dakar, Senegal, covering: equipment support and internet connectivity to Africa affiliates; attitudinal change activities; and IT training.

We believe that better communications will allow Africa to play its rightful role in the international solidarity arena. Campaigns such as the one against the Chinese ship An Yue Jiang, which planned to deliver weapons to Zimbabwe, can be used as case studies. The blocking and pursuit of the ship showed the power of good communications in international work. Improved communication is the key to a better performing ITF Africa. It is for this reason that the regional office in Nairobi has chosen communication improvement as its top priority for 2009 and beyond.
