In an industry where both hazards and profits are high — worth US$100 billion a year globally — fishers are the most abused workers in the world. The ITF Fisheries section works to address exploitative practices in this largely unregulated industry and has become a key part of the ITF’s global activities.
ITF-affiliated unions believe it is essential to set out minimum standards that protect workers in the treacherous fishing industry. To achieve this we have created and continue to sustain grassroots union interest within countries and corporations with no previous history of union activity.
We also work at the highest levels of international organisations, such as the International Labor Organization (ILO) in order to further expand regulation of practices and attain at the very least minimum standards within the industry. From contractual obligations to medical treatment onboard, we campaign, lobby and negotiate for best practices to be adopted in every fishing nation.
Meanwhile, the fisheries sector is in crisis with some 70 per cent of fish stocks being exploited, depleted or in the process of being rebuilt as a result of over fishing. One of the central policies of the section continues to be the sustainable harvesting of living marine resources. As the sector becomes increasingly globalised, we continue to address key issues, such as depleting fish stocks straddling different economic zones and interests. With a worldwide reach through its affiliated unions, the ITF is well placed to deal with the international dimension.
The ITF enables fishers around the world on sea or land to share and exchange information on practices and union activity, building networks of cooperation and mutual assistance. Join us and together we will create a fairer, safer and sustainable future.
