ETF protests against violation of workers’ rights by UPS Turkey
On Thursday 1 July 2010, an ETF delegation participated at an international solidarity action in Istanbul, Turkey, to protest against the violation of fundamental workers’ rights by UPS Turkey. Since April of this year, the UPS employer is intimidating and dismissing workers for their trade union membership and for embarking on a campaign by ITF affiliate Türkiye Motorlu Tasit Isçileri Sendikasi (TÜMTIS) to organise the workplace. more >>

ETF workshop tackles poor working conditions at sea and bad image associated with maritime professions
At the ETF workshop in Berlin (Germany) on Tuesday 15 June 2010, representatives of trade unions, shipowners, maritime academies, universities, manning agents, the European Commission and ILO discussed how to enhance the image of the maritime sector and promote quality working and living conditions at sea. The 40 participants, coming from 16 different countries, provided several recommendations to turn the tide and improve the attractiveness of the sector as working environment. more >>

New project for capacity building for affiliates in New Member States and Candidate Countries
The ETF and the International Training Centre of the ILO (International Labour Organisation) recently received the approval of the European Commission for the joint project proposal entitled “Decent Work for Transport Workers.” In the time span of 12 months and via nine training activities about capacity building for social dialogue, the project will train 250 participants from 64 trade unions coming from 15 New Member States (NMS) and Candidate Countries (CC). more >>

 

Vote European Parliament Working Time Directive Strasbourg 17 June 2010
European Parliament says no to 86-hour workweek
On Wednesday 16 June 2010, the European Parliament confirmed in plenary the Employment Committee vote against a European Commission proposal to exclude self-employed drivers from the working time rules. Sensitive to the one year and a half ETF campaign on equal working time for all professional drivers, the European Parliament voted for safer roads, fair competition and better working conditions for drivers. more >>
