The ETF welcomes European Parliament’s rejection of Port Package II
18 January 2006
The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) welcomes today’s vote by the European Parliament to reject the Ports Services Directive by 532 votes to 120, with 25 abstentions.
By meeting the expectations of most of the stakeholders in the port industry and in particular those of port workers, the European Parliament has given, once again, a clear sign that the construction of the European project has to take into account the legitimate aspirations of European citizens for the improvement of their working and living conditions and not the other way round.
The ETF congratulates its affiliates and their members for their successful commitment to fighting this new attempt for deregulation and casualisation of port labour.
The ETF expects that the Commission will draw the necessary conclusions from the vote by withdrawing its proposal.
The European Ports Sector needs stability and social peace in order to be able to respond to its potential for development and confidence for investment.
