ETF deeply concerned about enduring BA dispute

31 May 2010

The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) expresses its concern about the further development of the long dispute between the British Airways (BA) management and the UNITE BA cabin crews. The persistence of the BA management to take disciplinary actions against cabin crews executing their legitimate right to strike makes new union actions inevitable. The ETF considers this conflict as a top priority since it can set a dangerous precedent and have far-reaching implications on social rights for all European transport workers.

The ETF is deeply concerned about the lack of progress in the negotiations and wants to emphasize that only mutual respect for each other’s position can lead to a solid and fair solution. François Ballestero, the ETF Political Secretary for Civil Aviation: “The attacks of the BA management against workers’ basic social rights make a strong union reaction absolutely unavoidable. Their unwillingness to achieve a negotiated and balanced settlement makes this dispute unnecessary long.”

The ETF closely monitors the developments of this social conflict and will hold an extended discussion on this issue during the next ETF Civil Aviation Section meeting in Brussels on 7 and 8 June 2010. The ETF expresses its support with the UNITE colleagues in their fight for safeguarding jobs and working conditions and calls its members to take concrete and lawful solidarity initiatives.
