ETF Lorry Convoy demonstrates at European Institutions in Brussels
27 April 2010
On Wednesday 28 April 2010, the lorry convoy of the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) will demonstrate at the European district in Brussels to protest against the introduction of an 86-hour working week for some categories of professional drivers. Between 10h00 and 11h00, 15 lorries and busses will drive around the buildings of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European Council. Trade union activists from throughout Europe will join the convoy; an ETF delegation will attend the vote in the European Parliament on the Working Time Directive.
The European Institutions are currently revising the European directive on working time for professional drivers. If adopted in its current form, the revised law will increase the working time for self-employed drivers from 48 to 86 hours per week. The European Parliament, who rejected this proposal several times before, will vote once more on Wednesday 28 April at 11h00.
ETF campaigns for safer roads and better jobs
The past five days the convoy crossed 6 European countries and visited five cities. On Monday, Members of the Dutch Parliament welcomed the ETF delegation in The Hague and promised to question the Dutch Minister of Transport on the Working Time Directive for professional drivers. In the afternoon, the convoy visited Düsseldorf, Germany, where a press conference was organised. On Tuesday, the convoy will stop in Schengen, Luxembourg, and Paris, France. The lorry convoy is the coping-stone of an 18-month ETF campaign for safer roads for the European citizens and better jobs for the professional drivers.
The ETF fights for the rejection of the European Commission proposal for the revision of the Working Time Directive for mobile personnel in road transport (Directive 2002/15/EC). The proposal intends to introduce an 86-hour working week for the self-employed professional drivers.
