ETF response to the Green Paper on EU Maritime Policy: publication launched
25 June 2007
In a publication released today, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) warns the Commission that the human factor should be thoroughly considered in Europe’s future road map for a more competitive and socially sustainable maritime sector.
Under the title ETF response to the Green Paper on a future EU Maritime Policy, the brochure compiles the answers provided by European seafarers, dockers and fishermen to the key questions raised by the Commission, and wraps up an ETF contribution to the dialogue round.
European seafarers call on the Commission to address, in particular, the eradication of unfair competition from substandard shipping and Flags of Convenience, the abolition of discrimination between seafarers on grounds of nationality or residence criteria, the reversion of social dumping mainly in the Ferry sector, the creation of working conditions at a “level playing field” in Europe, and the need for quality training.
European dockers highlight that wild liberalization attempts are threatening their jobs and facilitating social dumping, while decisions on port work organization should always be legitimated by the Social Partners.
European fishermen demand the Commission to provide answers to important safety concerns, the need to be involved in actions aimed at improving the marine environment, and to key regulatory challenges.
ETF General Secretary Eduardo Chagas said: “As this brochure shows, thousands of maritime workers are calling on Europe to play its part in promoting the sector, improving their working and living conditions and ensuring cleaner seas for the generations to come. Europe shouldn’t disappoint them”.
